Eligibility
To apply for ABSLTA Fellowship:

ABSLTA Members: Must meet at least 3 out of 5 criteria
-
Non-Members: Must meet at least 4 out of 5 criteria
All applicants must meet mandatory standards for ethics, safeguarding, and professional conduct.
Fellowship Criteria
Applicants should demonstrate experience or achievement in the following areas:
1. Qualifications
-
BSL Level 6 or higher
-
Teaching qualification such as PGCE, QTS, QTLS, or equivalent
-
Relevant degree
-
CPD in BSL linguistics or approved BSL teaching training
2. Experience
-
10+ years in BSL teaching or a related field
-
Expertise in teaching BSL as a second language
-
Specialisation in assessment, curriculum, or teacher training
-
Experience across different teaching levels or settings
3. Contribution to BSL Education
-
Mentoring or coaching new teachers
-
Leading workshops or training sessions
-
Supporting ABSLTA projects and best practices
4. Diversity & Inclusion
-
Promoting equal opportunities and supporting underrepresented groups
-
Advocating for professional development for all BSL teachers
5. Professional Standards & CPD
-
Ongoing professional development
-
Commitment to safeguarding and accurate BSL usage
-
Respect for regional BSL variation
Selection Process
Applications are reviewed by the Fellowship Selection Panel, which includes:

Fellows

An ABSLTA trustee

ABSLTA member representatives

An external professional

All decisions remain confidential until the announcement.
Timeline
November 2025
Applications Open
The Fellowship application form becomes available for all eligible candidates. You can begin your nomination and prepare your supporting documents and video submission.
March 2026
Application Deadline
All applications must be submitted by this date - 1st March 2026. Late submissions will not be considered.
April 2026
Panel Review
The Fellowship Selection Panel will review all submissions, assess eligibility, and shortlist candidates for interviews if required.
Summer 2026
AGM Announcement
Successful Fellows will be announced and formally recognised at the ABSLTA Annual General Meeting.
