A Chronicle of ABSLTA’s 35-Year Odyssey

As we look back on ABSLTA’s journey over the past 35 years, we reflect on a story of growth, resilience, and dedication. From three logos and two name changes to six committed chairs and 35 AGMs, our history is rich with transformation and achievement.

In the late ’70s, British Sign Language (BSL) education began with research projects at institutions like Moray House (University of Edinburgh), the Centre for Deaf Studies (University of Bristol), and the Sign Language Linguistic Group (University of Newcastle). By the early ’80s, the approval of the Sign Language Teacher Training Course (STTC) was a key milestone, with City Lit leading the way in adult education.

The birth of CACDP in 1980, from a Communication Skills Project, laid the groundwork for independent organisations in sign language education. The STTC’s approval in 1983, with accreditation to City Lit, helped integrate teaching skills into the programme.

In 1985, Clark Denmark started the British Sign Language Training Agency at Durham University, aiming to empower Deaf individuals to teach BSL. ABSLT (now ABSLTA) was officially established in 1989, uniting BSL tutors under the British Deaf Association.

Charles Herd, Melinda Napier, Gillian Stringer, and a dedicated committee of volunteers were instrumental in growing ABSLTA. The transition from ABSLT to ABSLTA included adding “Assessors” in 2006 and changing from “Tutors” to “Teachers” in 2014, reflecting our members’ professional qualifications.

In 2015, ABSLTA updated its branding, moving from blue and yellow to vibrant red and blue, symbolising our renewed energy and commitment.

Despite having over 350 members in 1989, our membership faced challenges, with a significant decline of 93.71% by 2014. At the 25th AGM, membership dropped to 22, and David Pilkington nominated Emma Iliffe as the 6th Chair, succeeding Melinda Napier after 11 years.

2014 marked a turning point with a new qualification system, leading to a revival. Membership grew by 418.18% from 2014 to 2024, reaching a thriving total of 114 members.

As we celebrate 35 years, we honour the dedication of all members who contributed to ABSLTA’s legacy. Our journey, full of challenges and successes, sets the stage for a bright future. We are proud to be the world’s leading sign language teacher membership and hope our example inspires others globally.

Looking ahead, we are excited about our new website launch and the election of a new Chair, marking the beginning of a new chapter for ABSLTA.
